Setup ftp and sftp on MAC OS X

Issue:

Remote access to Mac computers for things like scan to folder

Solution:

Start the FTP Server in OS X

This will start a generic FTP and FTPS server on the Mac, but not an SFTP server:

    • Launch the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command to start the FTP server:

sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

    • Confirm the FTP server works by typing:

ftp localhost

If you see the familiar FTP login:

$ ftp localhost

Trying ::1…

Connected to localhost.

220 ::1 FTP server (tnftpd 20100324+GSSAPI) ready.

Name (localhost:Paul):

How to Enable SSH & SFTP Server in Mac OS X with Remote Login

By starting the “Remote Login” service, you enable SSH and SFTP servers in OS X. These instructions are the same for enabling remote login and accompanying SSH servers in OS X El Capitan, Yosemite 10.11, 10.10, OS X Mavericks 10.9, 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.7 Lion, and 10.6 Snow Leopard.

    1. Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu, and click on the “Sharing” preference panel

    1. Select the checkbox next to “Remote Login” to enable it, like the screenshot indicates

Clicking the checkbox will instantly start the various remote login servers, including sftp and ssh.

$ sftp localhost

sftp user@remote_host

ssh paul@192.168.0.25
